Guitar Chords Learn to Play – Learning Chord Inversions

Many people think that playing chord inversions will be very complicated and hence defer learning them. Actually it is not so difficult as they have thought of. Once you learn what chord inversions are, you will be able to play all kinds of them on your own.

Learning chords on guitar begins with open chords, next you add occasional basic chords and then you learn how to move major and minor basic chords all around the neck.

If you know the basics and want to improve your knowledge and know how chords are made on the fret board, you have to learn the CAGED system. If you do not know chord inversions, the tonic of the chords you play will the lowest note of the chord. Whenever a note other than the tonic is the base note, then the chord is an inversion. Most of the chords are played with three or four notes. Hence besides the tonic, there will be two or three notes in the bass position.

There are three kinds of chord inversions called first, second and third inversions. If the first inversion, the bass note is the third of the note. In second inversion, the 5th of the chord is the bass and in the third inversion, the 7th of the chord is the bass.
